Golden Globes Frontrunners 2016

Golden Globes

We’re days away from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual “Golden Globe” nominations and some big names look ready to match up for this pre-cursor to the Oscars. While not any kind of assurance, a Golden Globe win almost always ups the odds for an Academy Award contender. This years crop of favorites:

Best Actor – Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon

DiCaprio is the sentimental favorite and many hope a win here will catapult him to his first Oscar. Damon’s performance in “The Martian” has been buttered in award talk since the movie premiered mostly for Damon’s ability to carry most of the movie by himself. Michael B. Jordan in “Creed” has generated the most recent buzz but against the two veterans, he seems like a long shot even for a “Rocky” movie. I loved Oscar Issac in “Ex Machina” but I seem to be the only one. Also, Arnold Schwarzennegger in “Maggie” deserves far more love than he’s gotten for it. It’s not that the bar is lower for the Golden Globes just the voting pool is broader and Arnold’s performance easily swims in that pool. Not holding my breath on that one.

Best Actress – Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, Brie Larson

Blanchett is hampered by being in two different roles (“Carol”, “Truth”) that warrant nomination and splitting her own vote. J-Law is getting the pre-Christmas buzz for “Joy” and she’s J-Law so she will carry a lot of voters for just existing. I have no problem with that. Brie Larson is getting rave reviews for “Room” and unlike the male category, the veterans here have been generously recognized and this might be enough to give the newcomer enough space to elbow them out of the way and on to the podium. I saw Larson first in “Hoot” as a teenager and a few episodes of “The League” as an adult and despite her most recent claims, she does indeed have “it” no matter how you reference it. Do not be surprised if Larson brings home the gold.

Best Movie – “The Martian”, “Room”, “The Revenant”, “Ant-Man”

OK, full disclosure, I haven’t seen any of these except “Ant-Man“. The other three are generating most of the awards buzz but I don’t really have a dog in the hunt. So I’m going with “Ant-Man” because I consider it the third best of Marvel’s 12 movie cinematic universe (Top 5 “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “The Avengers”, “Ant-Man”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, “Iron-Man”), a very fun and underrated heist movie and the MCU will never get any awards love. “The Martian” looks like the favorite of the other three.

Next up: The Golden Globes TV frontrunners. I promise it will be more in depth because I watch a lot more TV.
